Vancouver School Program

What is it?

The Vancouver School Program gets elementary school students involved in all aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) through fun food experiments. Student volunteers from UBC visit classrooms across the Greater Vancouver Area to teach FREE STEAM lessons using food.

Milk & Soap Art Swirls

This project introduces students to the concepts of surface tension, hydrophobia, hydrophilia, and polarity. By the end of the project each student will have created their own coloured milk artwork and understand the concepts behind it.

Spaghetti Structures

This lesson teaches students about strength, shapes, forces/loads, and stability. By the end of the lesson, each student will have built a series of structures from spaghetti and marshmallows.

Thermodynamics of Ice Cream

This lesson teaches students about phases of matter, the movement of particles under different conditions, equilibrium, and heat transfer. By the end of the lesson, each student will make their own ice cream by following a recipe using thermodynamics!

Bees and Honey

This lesson uses basic microscopy to teach students about honeybees, pollination, and honey. By the end of this lesson, each student will understand the importance of pollinators in our ecosystems, observe the evolutionary adaptations that make honeybees so efficient, and have the opportunity to sample locally produced honey.

Natural pH Indicators

This lesson aims to teach students about acidic and basic solutions and indicator function. By the end of the activity, each student will be able to test out a natural indicator on multiple household items of varying pH. 

Skittle Statistics

This lesson introduces students to the fundamentals of statistics. By the end of the lesson, each student should have done a statistical analysis on the frequency of different colours in Skittles packages.

Edible Water Bottles

In this lesson on polymerization and sustainability, students will explore the concept of creating biodegradable materials by making edible water bottles using sodium alginate and calcium chloride.
